Group Demands Change!

Some comments on the angry group forming in the Boston area, "Voice of the Faithful." The author, Kelly Clark, is an active parishinor at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston, who has had a front pew seat to much of The Troubles.

Whenever a group starts calling for change! in the Church it is helpful if someone somewhere asks exactly what changes they have in mind. Kelly does so. It looks like VoF advocates the wrong ones (not to metion the metaphysically impossible).

Kelly, though, is on the side of the angels (ie: orthodox).

Know anyone leaving the Church because Bishops and Priests Sin? Read this.

I wrote this for people who claim to be thinking of leaving the Church. I saw on Fr. Bob Carr's Site, From the Middle of the Storm, that he was dealing with someone along these lines. (Fr. Carr is parochial vicar for Boston's Holy Cross Cathedral.) How can anyone base their membership in Christ's Body on the behavior of priests? The problems we are seeing result from neglect and disobedience of the Church not from rightly lived Catholicism. It's like giving up on traffic light because you got clobbered going through a red light.

With just cause, the public feels righteous indignation over the poor way officials within the Church have responded to the recent scandals involving priests and pedophilia.  While some are using these scandals to try to advance an anti-Catholic agenda, for the most part the attention
being brought to this problem is appropriate. I think this attention will help to purify the Church.

The sexual molestation of children is a grave evil.  Killing them is even worse.  I am outraged by both evils.  I am outraged especially that "Catholic" politicians support the killing of children by abortion and that  "Catholic" institutions honor pro-abortion politicians.  This scandal has contributed to the deaths of over 41,000,000 children. As in he pedophilia scandal,  we see people occupying positions of authority who
fail to exercise this authority to protect children. 

Church leaders should have done more to protect children from pedophiles. Many people wonder if the Church could have done more to help Jews in World War II. Sadly, future generations will look back and wonder how people and institutions which call themselves "Catholic' could honor those who believed in a woman's right to choose to kill her pre-born child.

Now with the Weakland case, can anyone disagree with me that we should be down on our faces thanking God for the revelations of the last five months?

If I hear anyone lament that this is the end of the American church I'm going to say good riddance! Let it die! Let the Roman Catholic Church rise up in its place.

A few years ago about 40 American bishops. led by Archbishops Weakland, and, I think John Quinn, now (thankfully) retired, signed a letter petitioning and challenging Rome for greater "collegiality" and for leadership to be less centralized in the Vatican and instead shared with the diocesan bishops. I groaned in disbelief that anyone could think that a good idea, though I guess few people did, thankfully, after how these bishops had made such a mess of the faith in the U.S.

No Dave, I haven't! If they have given up hope on the Church, they are not traditional in any sense, they are heretics, because Jesus told us the gates of hell would not prevail. These guys give up too easily.

Also, Hope is one of the three theological virtues which we need! If they give up hope in the Church just where do they intend to go? Who else has the words of eternal life?

JS Online: 1980 letter from Weakland to Marcoux

I have just taken a glance at the Weakland papers. I just read the 1980 letter. It sounds like the classic story of a young penniless homosexual man taking advantage of an older powerful homosexual man, wrapping him around his finger and taking him for all he's worth. Weakland over-explains and it comes off like therapy writing, a catharsis. A thoughoughly dysfunctional relationship which makes me wonder which one the victim is. Both I suppose. Yet Alan Keys had an excellent show tonight on the Weakland case. I never thought I'd be agreeing with Richard Sipe. Keyes brought up an earlier quote from Weakland where he spoke about molested boys who got older so their abusers lost interest. Weakland, with stunning cynicism one sees in older homosexual men, said that is the point where these boys begin to "squeal."

Squeal?

Keyes also recounted the story of a whistle blower in the diocese, a school principal I think who wrote Weakland on his concerns that a boy in his school was being molested by a priest. Rembert's reply was that he would have his lawyers go over that letter searching for liable. The principal was eventually fired. He went on that this was a pattern. of bad guys getting promoted and good guys being thrown overboard.. More later, I'm falling asleep at the keyboard... I'll fix spelling links, later too. I've been wanting him gone for years, waiting for his retirement Now I pity him. What a way to top off an episcopal career. ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZzzz

Oh I hope so. I could have written this article myself. I, too, tend not
to attend Sunday Mass in my parish because the "music ministry" drives
me up the wall. The "minister" changes from organ to piano and back
again. A nun plays the flute. Sometimes she has the school children play
flutes and violins. Have you ever heard 12/13 years olds play those
instruments? How is one to concentrate on the Liturgy. I recall what
Hans Urs von Balthasar wrote: "Surely excluded [from the liturgy] us
everything which directs the community away from attention to God and
his coming and turns its gaze back upon itself...Everything in the
celebration which does not guide the hearts and thoughts toward the One
being celebrated is evil..."

I am a 7th grade CCD teacher and I must tell you that I teach only the
orthodox Catholic faith including the evils of sin which many do not
want to teach. My students know the faith as much as I am able to teach
in the 60 hours I have to do so.

I hope you are right that the Church can get back on track. Let's pray
for that day.

Deliverance Is Coming

I have to confess I'm a bit surprised when I hear orthodox Catholics speak of the current scandal as depressing. Of course, what was done to the children and young people is horrible. But one has to remember the scandal is not that all this horror came to light, but that it has been going on for the last 40 years, and God only knows how much longer. If this wickedness were to continue as it had been it would be a true calamity.

As far as depressing goes, personally I've been depressed by what has been the status quo of the Church for the past 40 years! Because I am orthodox I have felt like an outsider in every parish I've belonged to. Frankly, I have always hated parish life. Sunday Mass has always been the loneliest Mass of the week for me. I've felt much more at home at weekday Masses.

As for those of us in the battle for orthodoxy, this is the answer to our prayers and sufferings all these years—of being bullied by "progressive" priests and feminazi nuns, who step all over the sensibilities and sensitivities of Catholics offended by their abuses, who justify themselves with a presumption that they are more "compassionate" than everybody else. They shout down those who defend Church teaching with vague rhetoric about "social justice" while starting new capital campaigns to build another monument to themselves on the parish grounds.

Deliverance has come for all who have had their concerns fall on deaf ears when they tried to tell the bishop that Sister Coriander is giving New Age rubbish to the CCD classes instead of the truth of Christ. Or that the RCIA teachers spend half the class apologizing for Church teachings, and telling them with a wink to skip over what they don't like.

The days of children thinking they've graduated from the faith when they are confirmed, and entering their teens never having heard that fornication is wrong, and of middle-aged women in tight pants crowding the sanctuary, please God, are coming to a close. And on and on and on.

We should be dancing in the streets like on V-E Day. Ding Dong! The witch is dead! But, our time may be better spent tending the wounded. The people damaged by priests and religious who became what they hate—that which they swore they would never become—tight-jawed narrowed-eyed, repressed, legalistic disciplinarians, except that now they enforce "political correctness" with an iron rod the way a generation past enforced scrupulous minutiae with a steel ruler, raising a generation that thought the Church was a prison, where now they are taught it's a free-for-all. God help you if you get in their way.

No, what we see today is the pimple being squeezed, the boil being lanced and all the puss and the poison running out. The New Spring is coming, and no one should be surprised if the world starts looking darker, because that is also an opportunity for the Church to start shining brightly from within, no thanks to us, but by the sovereign movement of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, We are undergoing Spring cleaning. God's judgment is upon us and that is good.

This has to happen for the New Spring to come. Just before the turn of the Millennium I had a piece in Catholic Dossier saying that if there is not some kind of intervention diverting us from the road we're on as a society, then we can expect to see orthodox Catholics and faithful Evangelical being put in concentration camps within 20 years. The current troubles, I see as an intervention of God. I think He has had enough.

The Lord hears the cry of the poor: The child whose adult life went into a ditch thanks to abuse by a priest left free to prey on children, the grief of the orthodox Catholic sick of the liturgy being debauched, of the and twisting and rejection of Church teaching, the silent scream of the unborn, disposed of like so much trash—or worse—cannibalized for junk science, and the cries, which only God can hear, of all the children he willed to be but who were never allowed to exist due to the selfishness and ignorance of contraception use. God hears all the dead and suffering from sexually transmitted diseases, because people who "knew better" than the Holy Spirit's guidance of the Magisterium told the young and the beautiful that the "modern" Church no longer pays attention to those "pelvic issues" and "repressive" moral teachings on human sexuality.

Yes these are the Church's poor, and may God have mercy on those wolves who claimed to be calling for "justice" over the "oppressive" Church, while these little ones, the Anawim suffered under their reign.

Arise, my Love, my Dove, my beautiful one, the light has come. The night soon will be long past! The New Spring is coming!

Great Archbishop

My friend Austin Ruse of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute at the UN sent this along requesting that I post it. Archbishop Pell is indeed a great bishop. I interviewed him a few years ago for Inside the Vatican when he was still Bishop of Melbourne, and we discussed this issue. It's so simple. Why can't the American bishops do this? Pacific Rim Bureau (CNSNews.com) - "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," the Roman Catholic bishop of Australia's largest city told his congregation Sunday morning, minutes after refusing to give communion to homosexual and lesbian activists.

"Homosexual acts are contrary to the natural law, they close the sexual act to the gift of life," Archbishop George Pell told Catholics gathered for Pentecost Sunday Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney.

In an orchestrated move, 20 members of a group campaigning for the church to give full recognition to homosexual Catholics had earlier gone forward for communion, while another 12 did the same St. Patrick's Cathedral in another major city, Melbourne.

Each member of the Rainbow Sash Movement (RSM) wore a rainbow-colored sash over their clothing. In both churches they were denied communion, although in Melbourne, Archbishop Denis Hart did offer the sash-wearers a blessing.

Although the bids failed, a spokesman for the group said Monday they were heartened to hear that similar attempts made by RSM members in several cities in the U.S. Sunday had met with success.

In New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and Rochester, spokesman Michael Kelly said, homosexual and lesbian members wearing the sashes said they had received communion. RSM was formed in Australia, but now has chapters in a handful of U.S. cities, too.

Kelly, a former Franciscan seminarian, attributed the discrepancy to "confusion" in the church hierarchy about how to handle the issue of homosexuals.

Because some priests had knowingly given communion to homosexuals, while others had refused to, the organization was now considering "an appeal to Rome."

"Refusal to give communion is the second most serious sanction in church life, after excommunication. So it's a very rare and very important sanction that's been imposed on us."

Kelly, who was part of the Sydney group in Sunday's protest, said the group had donned their sashes during the introductory hymn, as a symbol of their desire to "embrace our sexuality as a sacred gift."

They then participated in the service as usual, but when they had approached the altar for communion, Pell had told them, "I can't help you."

The bishop had not offered them a blessing either. If he had done so, it would have been seen as a "token gesture," Kelly said, but nonetheless one that would have said to the group: "We don't completely reject you."

They then returned to their pews, where they stood "in silent protest" while other communicants returned to their places and knelt, as is traditional.

A short while later, Pell read out a prepared statement, he said.

In the statement, a copy of which was provided by the Archdiocese of Sydney Monday, Pell said he deeply regretted that people professing the Catholic faith would mount "an ideological demonstration" during Mass, and particularly at communion time.

Any Catholic who publicly defined himself as "supporting or practicing activities contrary to church teaching in a serious matter is not entitled to receive Holy Communion."

The same would apply to a married person living in adultery, he added.

Pell said church teaching on sexuality was "clear and unequivocal, and derives from natural moral law, which we believe is unchanging ... God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, and important consequences follow from this."

Kelly said Monday he found the comment "childish" and "unhelpful," not something worthy of a major church leader.

He charged that the current child-sex abuse scandal in the church in the U.S. and elsewhere was the result of the church hierarchy's refusal to bring matters of sexuality out into the open.

The RSM would continue to campaign to be allowed to participate fully and openly in the life of the church, Kelly said. Homosexuals had been involved in the church for centuries, he added, but their participation had taken place under a "code of silence and invisibility."

Although Kelly said church leaders had ignored nine written appeals for dialogue over the past five years, Pell in his statement said he would "continue to dialogue privately and publicly with those who think differently" about church teaching on marriage and family.

He also said he would pray for the protestors.

"Although human weakness is universal and God's mercy infinite, the path to happiness and heaven for a Catholic does not lie in seeking to re-interpret what is right and wrong," the bishop said.

"Rather, one should commit oneself, in good faith, to the church and its teachings and work towards following these teachings as closely as possible."

I just took a quick glance at a forum on the Free Republic site, where there are postings speculating on what American cardinal might be outed as a homosexual. I urge anyone looking at it to take it with a huge grain of salt. They haven't got a clue what they are talking about.

Wolves in Shepherd's Clothing

Emily Stimpson (link at left) comments on Bishop Tom Daily saying, "I'm not a policeman, I'm a shepherd." Bishop Daily is a very nice man, and I like him, but this quote is very typical of "The Bishops That Don't Get It." In that bishops who make this reference seem to imagine shepherds to be kind of etherial, gentle blokes instead of the manly, tough hombres that they really are. A true shepherd is a Mensch. Another example of this occurred when Bishop John Leibrect of Springfield-Cape Giradeau, MO, (Cardinal Law's successor there), who headed of the committee to implement Ex Corde Ecclesiae made a similar quote.

Thiscommittee dragged its feet for 12 years on that simple document allowing an entire cycle of school children to pass from first to 12th grade in that time who otherwise would have been protected by ECE. He said, "This staff I carry is not a weapon, it's the staff of a shepherd!"

He missed the point. Just what did he think a shepherd did when the wolves came around? He tore after them with that shepherd's crook, every inch a weapon. Yes, the crook pulls the lambs back from the edge of the cliff, but it is also used to bash the wolves across the teeth. He missed the fullness of the symbolism. The bishops crook symbolizes the power of his office, to be brought down on the wolves when they take after the lambs.

The mistake Bishop Leibrect made was forgetting the real lambs, the students, and mistaking whining theologians and university administrators for the sheep who needed protection from the "big bad Vatican wolf."

Now, what we have seen in the Scandals is that the abusive clergy are not only wolves in sheeps clothing, but wolves in shepherd's clothing. And that Rome is not the problem. John Paul II knows what it means to be a shepherd, while his American brothers still don't get it.

Misnomer

Why do they call dissenters "progressives?" They haven't progressed past 1965. They are the living embodiment of Chesterton's quote, "He who marries the Spirit of the Age becomes a widower in the next." I hope that when thinking people use this term they intend to be ironic.

COLLEGE OF ST. ROSE (NY): Frank Rhodes, president emeritus of Cornell University, spoke on May 11. In 1987, Rhodes publicly welcomed dissident theologian Charles Curran to teach at Cornell in the midst of Curran's high-profile battle with the Catholic University of America (DC), which eventually fired him for dissent from Church teaching on contraception, divorce and homosexual activity. His honorary degree from St. Rose is hardly appropriate when Catholic educators are striving to implement Ex corde Ecclesiae, the 1990 apostolic constitution on Catholic higher education. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF FOREIGN SERVICE (DC): U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will speak on May 18. Pelosi is a dissident Catholic politician with a pro-abortion voting record, including her vote against a ban on partial-birth abortion. (Protest: Dr. John DiGioia, President, 202-687-4134.)

GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW (DC): Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams will speak on May 18. Both are public advocates of abortion rights and homosexual rights, and therefore inappropriate despite their commendable leadership on September 11. LE MOYNE COLLEGE (NY): Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York State Court of Appeals will speak on May 19. In 1998, Kaye wrote the court's ruling that individuals and not the state have the right to determine the fate of frozen embryos, which are not "persons". The ruling prevented a woman from impregnating herself against her divorced husband's wishes and thereby saving her offspring from being destroyed. LOURDES COLLEGE (OH): U.S. Rep. Nancy Kaptur (D-OH) will speak and receive and honorary degree on May 18. Kaptur's voting record on abortion is mixed, often earning about a 50 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee and including many votes in support of abortion rights. MARYWOOD UNIVERSITY (PA): Yolanda King, daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke on May 12. King is an activist for special rights for homosexuals, including efforts to change the United Methodist Church's prohibition on same-sex marriages and ordination of sexually active homosexuals (positions similar to Catholic teachings). MOUNT ST. MARY'S COLLEGE (CA): Leon Panetta, former chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, spoke on May 11. Panetta publicly supported Clinton's position on abortion, including partial-birth abortion. During his previous tenure as a U.S. Congressman from California, Panetta had a pro-abortion voting record and co-sponsored the Freedom of Choice Act in 1990.
